Choose Your Life in 2009!
January 27, 2009
I am a firm believer that we choose the kind of life we want to have. Some people call it a secret, but perhaps that is because most people “let life choose them” instead of choosing the life they want. The secret is that most people simply don’t believe they have any control over their lives.
It’s not a secret to me, it’s focus. The things we focus on, are the things we have. If I focus on Joy – I have joy in any circumstance. If I focus on Health – I will have health in all circumstance.
I can hear people saying, “but….” If there is a …but…following your focus, you simply aren’t focused. You are doubting. Doubt has no place in a life that is focused.
For the coming year, I have decided to be focused on three words. I am unashamedly a Christian. In my life that means that the Holy Spirit lives in me. I can never focus on anything that would not be in keeping with that belief. My focus may change through the year, but it will be because I need a life change, not because life has changed me. My three words to focus on this year are:
I am choosing to give extravagently. I will give of my finances, my time, and my emotions for others. I am not on this earth for the benefit of me. I am here for the benefit of others, and in order for me to be that, I must focus on giving. Otherwise, it’s too easy to become self-absorbed. I never want to be self-absorbed.
What does it mean to truly live? Well, I’m going to find out as I focus on the word live this year. For me, to live, is to breathe deeply of the wonders of the universe.
- To see a full moon, and marvel at it’s splendor
- To hear God whispering in the stillness
- To explore with all of my senses the world around me
Satan comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but Christ comes to give life, and life more abundantly. I am going to live like I truly believe that. When I was a kid, Donny Osmond did a remake of the song, I Believe. In this song, the belief is that out of the things that don’t look good, there is always good.
I’m excited to see how my life changes as I focus on these three words.
I challenge you to come up with three words that will shape you this coming year.
Some of you will want to choose more than three words. Don’t do it! Remember, you need to be focused, so choose three words, but choose them carefully.

Terri,
I am so glad to follow your words of wisdom. You seem to target me wherever I am in life. I think I’ll have my six (homeschooled) daughters read this article, and have them work on their focus words for the year 2009, as well.
